Atkins diet plan review

About Atkins diet plan

Atkins Diet is the most marketed and well-known low-carbohydrate diet. Authored by Dr. Robert C. Atkins, the diet regimen is a low carbohydrate, high protein diet.

Four Phase of Atkins Diet Plan

During Phase 1 (Induction), you restrict carbohydrate consumption to 20 grams each day, primarily from salad and other non-starchy vegetables. This phase lasts for about 14 days and is considered to be the most difficult phase.

In Phase 2 (Ongoing Weight Loss), you increase carbohydrate in the form of nutrient-dense and fibre-rich foods by 20 grams daily in the first week and then 30 grams daily in the next week until you gradually lose weight. Then you subtract 5 grams of carbohydrate from your daily intake so that you continue sustained weight loss. It is really confusing.

In Phase 3, known as ‘Pre-Maintenance’, you make the transition from weight loss to weight maintenance by increasing the daily carbohydrate intake in 10 gram increments each week.
In the last phase of the Atkins Diet Plan (Lifetime Maintenance), you select from a wide variety of foods while controlling carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance. Rarely people are able to maintain weight with this as you can’t be on diet throughout your life.

How Atkins diet works?

The Atkins Diet Plan weight loss program works on the principle of severely restricting carbohydrates intake in your daily Atkins diet meal plan. This would lower the body’s stored carbohydrate (glycogen), thus resulting in ketosis. Ketosis is a natural process that occurs when fats are converted into energy by the body usually when there is not enough glucose (carbohydrates) to provide for the body’s energy needs. During ketosis phase, the body would burn up fat and results in weight loss.
