Best Diet Program for Pregnant Women

An ideal diet system for soon to be moms!

When we think of women who are pregnant, we rarely think of any type of diet that they may be on. Most of the past generations insisted and encouraged a woman to eat enough food throughout the day for 2. In reality, this is not necessary, nor healthy.

The most important thing a woman who is pregnant can do is watch the types of foods she eats, as well as the amount. A pregnant provides all the essential nourishment for her child through the umbilical cord, so instead of eating enough food for 2, it is crucial for her to taking in enough nutrients for 2.

Take calcium supplements:

A pregnant woman should become familiar with the types of foods that will be needed to insure that her child is getting the proper nutrients. One of the important nutrients in a proper diet should be calcium. Calcium is vital to the mother as well as the child. Calcium is needed for the proper growth of bones and teeth in the child.

The mother also needs calcium in her diet to maintain good bone density and healthy teeth. It is shown that the child will deplete the calcium of the mother’s body if she does not intake the proper amount of calcium for herself and the child. This can cause tooth decay and weakening of the bones in the mother. It is recommended that a pregnant woman ingest at least 4 servings of calcium rich foods.

The folic acid:

Another key nutrient for a pregnant woman is folic acid. A deficiency in folic acid can result in birth defects in newborns. Many women think it is hard to take in enough folic acid during pregnancy, but this is simply not the case.

Green leafy vegetables, including spinach and lettuce are high in folic acid, as are nuts, legumes and many citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. These types of foods are easy to incorporate into any diet and in some should be eaten 2 to three times a day. Also, the prenatal vitamin contains many of these nutrients and should be taken on a regular daily basis.

Don’t forget about Vitamins!

Vitamin C and Vitamin A are also extremely important nutrients that must be included in your diet. Vitamin C helps promote a healthy immune system for you and your baby. Strengthening the immune system helps to fight against sickness and disease.

Vitamin A promotes healthy eyes, and also helps to maintain health in the urinary, respiratory and intestinal tracts, which helps to eliminate bacteria from developing and causing infections. These vitamins can be found in citrus fruits, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and many others.

Avoid junks foods and excessive carb!

It is essential for pregnant women to limit the amounts of foods that have low to no nutrient value such as candy and cakes. Equally important to stay away from is alcohol, caffeine and fatty foods. A healthy diet for pregnant women includes many foods that are high in nutrients and fiber and low in sugars.  You can eat plenty of healthy foods that will keep you and your baby in great shape, and help you maintain a moderate weight.

  • Anita says:

Scientific evidence has come to light which demonstrates a strong correlation between a dieting mother (aka, a woman aiming for a daily calorie deficit whilst pregnant) and a child pre-disposed to obesity.

In-utero, the child receives genetic cues that food will be ‘scarce’ after birth and their body responds by making them predisposed to retaining fat stores.

Moral of the story – DON’T diet whilst pregnant. Maintain a healthy weight, don’t make drastic changes to your eating and activity levels and trust your body to do what it does best.
